Nigropullo
Zwammerdam
Listen to the story
Nigropvllo is Nigrum Pullum, a small Roman fort on the Old Rhine at Zwammerdam in the Netherlands, known by name only from this map. Perhaps founded around 47 under the general Corbulo, it was destroyed in the Batavian revolt, rebuilt around 80 and rebuilt in stone around 175, before it was abandoned in the later third century. Its harbour yielded a whole group of Roman boats, dugout canoes and large river barges, making Zwammerdam one of the most important sites of Roman ship finds in north-western Europe.
