Niciu

Zawyet Razin (Barrington)

Niciu was Nikiupolis, the chief town of a district between Naukratis and Memphis, at Zawyet Razin. It was an important halt for people and goods travelling by water along the Canopic branch of the Nile between Alexandria and Memphis, and state grain shipments from the Fayum passed through on their way to the garrison of Nikopolis near Alexandria. In 640 the commander Domentianus held the town, but when the Arab general Amr attacked in the spring of 641 he fled, and his army was wiped out there.
