Listen to the story
Aegyptus, the name for Egypt, is spread across the Nile country of the map, and at first glance it seems to label the whole Roman province. It probably does not. The Roman writer Pliny used the name for the land around the Nile's mouths, the Delta, and called the Nile valley further upstream, towards Ethiopia, the Thebaid. The map seems to follow the same idea: however cleverly its letters are placed, the name really covers no more than the delta. Like many names in Egypt on the Tabula, it probably goes back to a revision of the map in the early imperial period.
