Alamannia
Listen to the story
Alamannia, the land of the Alamanni, stretches across the map from around Strasbourg to the Danube. The Alamanni were a confederation of several tribes, and an ancient historian already explained their name as meaning people gathered and mixed together. The historian Cassius Dio first mentions them in AD 213, when the emperor Caracalla fought them. After Rome abandoned its fortified frontier beyond the Rhine around 260, they gradually settled the lands left behind. The entry is therefore probably a late addition to the map, from the third or early fourth century, when coins of Constantine's sons proclaimed Alamannia defeated.
