Arcadia

Arkadia

Listen to the story

Arcadia, the mountainous heart of the Peloponnese in Greece, nearly lost a letter on the Tabula. The copyist first wrote Arcaia, and the missing d was squeezed in afterwards in a different ink, poorly inked and oddly placed, perhaps by the same hand that corrected a nearby name. The region is shown with its towns Tegea and Megalopolis. It was a land of high basins, lakes and winter snow, crossed by the main road from Corinth to Sparta. The Greek geographer Strabo called it a desolate wilderness in his day, a picture scholars generally doubt.
