Argene Superioris

Listen to the story

Argene Superioris is the map's puzzling label for the Armenian highlands, and it is usually read as a garbled form of Armenia Maior, Greater Armenia, the name a list of places compiled in Ravenna gives. Superioris simply means "of the upper". Greater Armenia was the eastern of the two Armenian kingdoms formed in 188 BC, a mountain land around the Araxes river and the sacred peak of Ararat. Rome and Parthia fought over it for centuries, and under Trajan, from AD 114, it was briefly a Roman province.
