Ariacta

Listen to the story

Ariacta is a region name set across the northern Balkans, and unusually it is written in black rather than the red normally used for lands and peoples. Its origin is uncertain. It has been linked to the Artaci, a Thracian people first humbled under Augustus by Crassus, or to the Areatae, whom the Roman writer Pliny placed on the northern slopes of the Haemus range towards the Danube.
