Belgica

Listen to the story

Belgica takes its name from the Belgae, the people Julius Caesar named as one of the three parts of Gaul and judged the bravest of them all. Their name is probably Celtic and is usually read as 'the strong' or 'the angry'. Augustus made their land an imperial province between 16 and 13 BC, ruled by a governor at Durocortorum, modern Reims. On the map the name spreads over a wide area that also takes in both Germanies and the land of the Sequani, regions that had become provinces of their own. Under Diocletian, Belgica itself was split in two, with capitals at Trier and Reims.
