Calabria

Salento

Listen to the story

Calabria, on this map, still means the heel of Italy, the Salento peninsula, not the toe that carries the name today. The name only moved around 670, when the Lombard dukes of Benevent seized Tarentum and Brundisium and the Byzantine administration transferred it to the former land of the Bruttii. The Greek geographer Strabo notes that most writers used Calabria interchangeably with Messapia, Iapygia and the Salentine land. Under Augustus it formed Italy's second region together with Apulia, and on the map its name is written small and in black, dwarfed by the neighbouring Apulia.
