Cappadocia

Listen to the story

Cappadocia, the Roman province in the heart of Asia Minor, now central Turkey, is one of only four of the seven provinces of the late Roman diocese of Pontus that the map names, alongside Bithynia, Galatia and Paphlagonia. The copyist had to squeeze the name into a crowded stretch of the map, and he fitted the first four letters with real skill. Even so, the downstroke of the second P runs over the last numeral of the distance figure sixteen on the road to Mesyla.
