Cersonesos
Listen to the story
Ceronesos is the Thracian Chersonese, the long peninsula known today as Gallipoli in Turkey, and its name on the map carries a copyist's slip: most likely a letter pair dropped from the Greek form Cherronesos, Greek ending and all. The peninsula runs the wrong way, slanting down to the right against its true course, as if folded over to make room for Crete, which has slid upwards beneath it. Curiously, the Greek geographer Strabo gave it the same reversed direction. Only the outer tip is really drawn, with Callipolis and Sestos, between the Gulf of Saros and the Hellespont.
