Caspyre

Kashmir

Listen to the story

Caspyre marks a region, not a road station, and it is identified with Kashmir. It lay around the sources of the Hydaspes, the river now called the Jhelum, and of two further rivers. The geographer Ptolemy placed its people in India on the near side of the Ganges, reaching as far as the Vindius mountains, and the Roman writer Pliny also knew of them. The name is taken to reflect late antique usage.
