Dalmatia
Listen to the story
Dalmatia took its name from the Dalmatae, a people of the rugged hinterland behind Salona who fought Rome for generations before the eastern Adriatic coast became a Roman province. Salona was its capital, one of the great cities of the empire, and the emperor Diocletian retired to his palace nearby, at today's Split in Croatia. Around 300 AD he split off the southern part around Scodra, which older lists still counted as Dalmatian. On the map, one oddity remains: there seems to be no station marking where Liburnia ends and Dalmatia begins.
