Clenderitis

Listen to the story

Clenderitis is a slip of the pen for Celenderitis, the territory of the Cilician harbour town of Celenderis, today Aydıncık on the southern coast of Turkey. On the map, however, the region sits far from its own town, which is drawn much further along the coast where the map's logic would expect it. The displacement probably arose when two sources were stitched together. One seems related to the Roman writer Pliny, who, in what is apparently the only ancient mention of the region, names it between Tarsus, Soloi and Adana, much as the map groups these places.
