Damirice

Listen to the story
Damirice is the Tabula's name for the Malabar coast of southern India, today's Kerala. Greek writers called the land Limyrike and placed its capital at Karura, with harbours such as Tyndis, Nelkynda and the famous Muziris, where many Greek ships put in. Scholars have suggested that Limyrike was a misreading of Damyrike, from an old Indian word related to Tamil. The map's spelling fits that idea, even though the Greek sources keep only the other form. A second label lower down, Scytia Dymirice, may well mark the same region twice.
