Cotii Regnum

Listen to the story

Cotii Regnum, the kingdom of Cottius, recalls a ruler of small peoples tucked away in the western Alps, whose chief town was Segusio, modern Susa in Italy. His realm was allied with Rome rather than conquered. Emperor Claudius granted the dynasty the title of king, and after the last Cottius died in AD 63, Nero made the land a Roman province. An arch at Susa, dated 8 BC, names Cottius as prefect over fourteen peoples. Because the kingdom vanished so early, scholars have argued that this label survives from the map's oldest layer. Curiously, the map sets it west of the Alpine crest.
