Caturiges

Listen to the story

The Caturiges were a Gallic people of the Cottian Alps, living in the upper valley of the Durance around Chorges and Embrun in southeastern France. Chorges still preserves their name. Julius Caesar met them as enemies when he crossed the Alps, and they appear among the Alpine peoples subdued under Augustus, both on the arch at Susa and on the victory monument recorded by the Roman writer Pliny. The geographer Ptolemy wrongly placed them in the Graian Alps. The map sets their name close to their own town of Catorigomagus, making them one of comparatively few peoples placed roughly correctly, and writes it in black.
