Cannate is the name of a people, set on the map in the lands beyond the Sea of Azov, below the Taurus mountains. No modern place is tied to it, but scholars link the name with the area of Tanais, the ancient Greek trading city near the mouth of the river Don, on the far edge of the world the Romans knew.
