Cadurci
Listen to the story
The Cadurci were a Celtic people of Aquitania, famous in Rome for their linen and their cushions. The satirist Juvenal even uses the word cadurcum for a kind of mattress, and the Roman writer Pliny gives them first place in stuffed bedding. Their chief town was Divona, now Cahors, and the landscape of Quercy in south-western France still carries their name. The Tabula, however, sets them far from home, between Angers and Poitiers. Scholars have read this misplacement as a sign that the names of peoples belong to an older layer of the map than its roads.
