Burcturi

Listen to the story

The Burcturi are the Bructeri, a Germanic people whose name the map gives in a scrambled form found nowhere else. Older research took it for a late vulgar spelling; later research sees a copyist's slip. First settled between the Ems and the upper Lippe, they were subdued by Drusus in 12 BC, yet in AD 9 they captured the eagle of the Nineteenth Legion when Varus was defeated. The map places them across the Rhine from Cologne, where they lived in the fourth century, squeezed with the other Germanic tribes into a narrow strip between the river and the ocean.
