Listen to the story
The Vocontii were a powerful Celtic people of southern Gaul, whose lands stretched from the Isère to the Durance and around Mont Ventoux. Their name is one of the comparatively few tribal names placed roughly in the right spot on the Tabula, and probably belongs to an older layer of the map from the age of Augustus. Loyal allies of Rome, they kept a rare autonomy and called their magistrates praetors and aediles. The Roman writer Pliny, who knew the region himself, names two capitals, Vaison-la-Romaine and Luc-en-Diois, and praises their sweet wine.
