Listen to the story

The Bituriges were a Celtic people whose name is usually explained as "eternal rulers", and the Roman historian Livy remembered them as once the leading tribe among the Celts. On the map their name carries a small slip: the copyist first wrote an L, making it Bituliges, and later squeezed in a strikingly large R in darker ink. They are generally taken for the Bituriges Cubi, famed for iron mines and metalwork, whose capital Avaricum is modern Bourges. Yet the map sets their name far from that city, a misplacement some scholars read as a sign that its peoples come from an older layer than its roads.
