Listen to the story
The Bagitenni were a Ligurian people of northern Italy, living along the upper Tanaro, and according to the Roman writer Pliny their land once reached west to Monte Viso and the sources of the Po. The poet Silius Italicus pictured them scattered over the rocks. Their first known mention, by the Roman scholar Varro, suggests this entry goes back at least to the Republic. Their capital, Augusta Bagiennorum, near modern Bene Vagienna, kept a forum, baths, a theatre and an amphitheatre, yet the map leaves it out, probably because its road was missing from the map's source.
