Arsoae
Listen to the story
The Arsoae were steppe traders who led camel caravans to Armenia and Media, exchanging northern furs and metals for Indian, Persian and Babylonian goods, and they grew rich enough to wear gold jewellery. They are the Sarmatian people otherwise known as the Aorsi, whose tribes ranged from the lower Don to the shores of the Caspian Sea. Their name has been explained from Ossetian as white or bright. In AD 50 their prince Eunones fought as Rome's ally against the Siraces, and the Alans later emerged from them. The map names them twice above the Caucasus, once near the Black Sea and again beside the Amazons.
