Bagi Getuli

Listen to the story

Bagi Getuli is probably to be read as Vagi Gaetuli, the wandering Gaetulians, a nomadic people of North Africa. The Roman historian Sallust is the only writer to describe them this way: beyond Numidia, he wrote, some Gaetulians lived in huts while others roamed about in a still more primitive way. Sallust placed them to the south, yet the map sets the tribe within Africa Proconsularis, around the Lesser Syrtis, a shift that probably reflects their roving life. The map gives the same epithet to the Sarmatians, and the wandering Gaetulians turn up again on the medieval Beatus world map.
