Armalausi

Erms (Fluss)

Listen to the story

The Armalausi were a people whose name the map sets beyond the Danube, beside the Alamanni. Their homeland is linked with the river Erms in Germany. Late Roman lists of peoples know them too, as Armilausini, each time just before the Marcomanni. Two explanations have been offered for the name. It may point to a river called Armala, or to a warrior's garment: the seventh-century writer Isidore of Seville describes an armilausa as a cloak split and open front and back, fastened only at the shoulders.
