Arote

Listen to the story

Arote is probably a shortened form of the Arachosians, a people whose homeland ancient writers never quite agreed on. The entry seems to go back to the Greek geographer Eratosthenes, before 200 BC, whose placing of nomads and rivers, preserved by Strabo, is largely mirrored here, with the neighbouring Maxere standing for the Massagetae. Yet Eratosthenes himself set the Arachosians both along the Oxus and south of the Hindu Kush, bounded by the Indus. Even whether a people or a region is meant remains unclear, and scholars think the name sits in the wrong place, beside Alexandria and Antiochia, above the Altars of Alexander.
