Aspurgiani

Listen to the story

The Aspurgiani were the people of Aspurgus, a ruling prince whose name is thought to mean something like 'strong in horses'. The Greek geographer Strabo places this Maeotian tribe around Sindike, settled along a stretch of five hundred stadia between the Greek cities of Phanagoreia and Gorgippia, in the lands east of the Sea of Azov. On the Tabula they sit just below the Alani, an entry that probably goes back to the report of Agrippa, Augustus' general and geographer. The geographer Ptolemy knew them too, though his text garbles the name into Asturikanoi.
