Confluentes

Koblenz · Coblence

Conflventes, the Confluence, is Koblenz in Germany, where the Moselle flows into the Rhine. The Roman writer Suetonius reports the claim that the emperor Caligula was born in a village above Confluentes. From 49 a wooden bridge on piles crossed the Rhine here, dated exactly by its timbers, and a bridge on stone piers later spanned the Moselle. After the Germanic raids of around 260, Constantine gave the town an irregular fortress, still standing in 354, with a garrison of soldiers called the defenders; by the middle of the fifth century Koblenz was Frankish.
