Consentia

Cosenza

Listen to the story

Consentia, now Cosenza, where the Busento meets the Crati, was the chief town of the Bruttii. Here in 410 AD the Visigothic king Alaric died soon after sacking Rome, and his men, as the historian Jordanes tells, turned the Busento aside, buried him with treasure in its bed and let the river flow back over the grave, which has never been found. Long before, Alexander of Epirus had been buried here too. On the map the fourth letter of the name is illegible.
