Coriallo

Cherbourg (Barrington)

Coriallo is the end of the road: the map's route from Orléans runs by Tours, Angers, Rennes and Coutances to the coast of the Cotentin peninsula and stops here. A modern atlas places it at Cherbourg, where an old harbour still existed in the eleventh century. Older research preferred the bay of La Hague, because Cherbourg seemed too far from Coutances, and linked Coriallo with the great Celtic rampart that cuts off the north-western tip of the peninsula. A medieval chronicle still knows a district called Coriovallensis.
