Rigomagus

Remagen

Rigomagvs is Rigomagus, today Remagen on the Rhine in Germany. Founded under Augustus, the fort was rebuilt larger under Tiberius, destroyed in the Batavian revolt of 69 and then rebuilt in stone. A hoard of coins buried around 274 is linked with its capture by the Franks. In 356, the Roman historian Ammianus reports, nothing was left standing along that stretch of the Rhine but the fort at Confluentes, the town of Rigomagus and a single tower near Cologne. The Roman register of routes leaves it out, but the milestone of Tongeren names it.
