Ricina

Villa Potenza

Listen to the story

The ruins of an amphitheatre by the river Potenza, just outside Macerata, mark Ricina, a Picene town that became a Roman colony under Septimius Severus around 200 AD. It took the name Helvia Ricina Pertinax, honouring the murdered emperor Helvius Pertinax, whose name Severus had adopted. On the map, as at neighbouring Auximum, the distances are there but the road lines are not.
