Urbe Salvia
Urbisaglia
Listen to the story
Urbs Salvia survives as the ruins of Urbisaglia in the Italian Marche, where the Roman town now forms an archaeological park. The Roman writer Pliny already knew its people, and the geographer Ptolemy listed it too. According to the historian Procopius, the Gothic king Alaric destroyed the town, though it was probably rebuilt afterwards. The map holds a small oddity here: the road lines linking the town to its neighbours Ricina and Asclopiceno are missing, even though the distance figures, twelve Roman miles on each side, are written in.
