Tyro

Tiro

Listen to the story

Tyro is the ancient Phoenician trading city of Tyre, today Sur in Lebanon. It once stood on a small island off the coast, crowded with tall houses behind massive walls and served by two harbours. Alexander the Great took it in 332 BC after a hard siege, building a causeway through the shallow sea from the mainland; the dam survived, and Tyre became a peninsula. The city grew rich on glass and purple dye, and the emperor Septimius Severus made it a Roman colony. On the map, a road branches off here towards Caesarea Paneas and on to Damascus.
