Vadis Sabates

Vado Ligure [6]

Listen to the story

Vadis Sabates takes its name from vada, Latin for shallows, for it was really the sheltered roadstead of a town about a mile away that survives as Savona. The site is Vado Ligure on the Ligurian coast, where the Alps meet the Apennines, as Cicero noted when he first mentioned it during the civil war of 43 BC. The map gives it a special drawing, one of its few unusual pictures. The later emperor Pertinax owned estates here. The road onward is drawn as two stretches with a sharp bend, yet together they give twelve Roman miles, exactly as in a Roman register of routes.
