Vesonna
Périgueux
Listen to the story
Vesonna, today Périgueux in France, took its name from Vesunna, the guardian goddess who watched over the town and who may once have been a spring goddess. Remains of what is probably her temple survive by the ancient forum in the centre of the Roman town, along with traces of an amphitheatre. The town was the chief place of the Gaulish people called the Petrocorii, and it is their name, not the goddess's, that lives on in Périgueux and the Périgord. It was a bishop's seat, and in 361 one of its bishops was deposed. From here a branch road led off towards Mediolanum.
