Verona
Listen to the story
Verona, the birthplace of the poet Catullus, lay in a tight loop of the Adige, where roads coming down from the Alps met routes crossing northern Italy. The Roman poet Ovid wrote that Mantua rejoiced in Virgil and Verona in Catullus. On the map, the road towards Hostilia carries an unusual label written out in full along the line itself: from Verona to Hostilia, thirty-three Roman miles. The branch of the Via Postumia towards Bedriacum, however, is missing. The town received Latin rights in 89 BC, and its great amphitheatre still stands.
