Listen to the story
Viminacium, near Kostolac in Serbia, was a legionary fortress on the Danube with a civilian town growing up beside it, and the map marks it with a pair of towers. The Seventh Legion Claudia was stationed here, the town became a municipium under Hadrian and a colony in AD 239, and for two decades it struck its own coins. In 285 Diocletian defeated his rival Carinus nearby, and local people still call a wide plain close by the emperor's threshing floor. Attila's Huns sacked the city in 441, and the Avars destroyed it for good in 582.
