City
Volsinis
Bolsena
Listen to the story
Volsinii, marked on the map with the usual pair of towers, is Bolsena in Italy, on the lake that bears its name. It was a second, refounded town. The first Volsinii, a powerful member of the Etruscan league of twelve cities, stood on a steep rock at what is now Orvieto until the Romans destroyed it in 264 BC, reportedly to seize its three thousand bronze statues, and resettled its people here. The new town prospered, and the Roman writer Pliny credits it with inventing the rotary stone mill. Sejanus, the notorious minister of Tiberius, was born here.
