Konya

Listen to the story

Iconium, today Konya in Turkey, was linked by ancient legend to the Greek word for an image: some said Prometheus and Athena shaped human figures from clay here after the great flood, while others told of Perseus and the Gorgon, who appear on the city's coins. The Greek geographer Strabo still called it a small town, yet the Roman writer Pliny praised it as the most celebrated city of Lycaonia, and the apostle Paul preached there. The map sets it beyond Tyana, although it really lay west of that city.
