Zimara

Pingan · Adatepe ?

Listen to the story

Zimara was a town and frontier fortress on the upper Euphrates, and the Roman writer Pliny reports that it lay only twelve miles below the river's source. Today it is usually placed at Pingan in eastern Turkey, where a stream still called Zimara Dere flows into the Euphrates, though scholars still debate the exact site. The map marks it with a pair of towers. Roman inscriptions found at Pingan include the tombstone of a cavalry unit apparently stationed there when Trajan annexed Armenia, and the ancient name lived on for centuries in a nearby Turkish village.
