City
Zephyrio
Mersin
Listen to the story
Zephyrio was a small Greek city on a headland on the coast of Cilicia, in what is now Mersin in southern Turkey. The map gives it only a name, with no picture, beneath the red lettering of the province. Its coins took the extra title Hadrianopolis, probably after one of Emperor Hadrian's visits to the region, and in AD 260 the Persian king Shapur the First captured it. The map also hides a slip: its ten miles to Mallos actually run to Cygnos, a station the copyist seems to have left out, probably for lack of space.
