Listen to the story
Virunum was the chief town of the Roman province of Noricum, in what is now Carinthia in Austria. It began as an Italian and Roman trading post on the Magdalensberg, a hill over a thousand metres high with a sanctuary on its summit, where merchants dealt in Norican iron, a metal Roman poets praised. Around the middle of the first century AD the settlement moved down to the Zollfeld plain below, and under the emperor Claudius it became a municipium. Excavations since the eighteenth century have uncovered a forum, a temple on the Capitol, a theatre and several sanctuaries. The unwalled town declined early in the fifth century.
