Listen to the story
Vindobona, the Roman forerunner of Vienna, was a legionary fortress with a civilian town on the Danube in the province of Upper Pannonia. Its name is probably Celtic, while Wien itself seems to come from the small river of that name. Around AD 100 the thirteenth legion began a stone-walled camp on a terrace above a side arm of the Danube, and the tenth legion completed it after 114. Marcomannic raiders destroyed it around 166. The emperor Marcus Aurelius stayed here often, though whether he also died here cannot be settled. Around 212 the civilian settlement became a self-governing municipium.
