Tiberias
Tiberias took its name from the Emperor Tiberius, in whose honour Herod Antipas built it on the shore of the lake that bears the same name. Hemmed in by mountains and thought unhealthy, the town was nonetheless richly favoured by Herod and raised to capital of Lower Galilee. After the destruction of Jerusalem it became the seat of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish high council, and of a great school, and warm springs rose at the foot of its acropolis. On the map two roads end here, twenty-three Roman miles from Scythopolis and sixteen from Gadara, with nothing beyond. The city is still called Tiberias, in Israel.
