Turribus
Porto Torres
Listen to the story
At the harbour of Turribus, today's Porto Torres in Sardinia, an ancient column was found that once marked the end of the road from Cagliari. The Roman writer Pliny calls the town the only Roman colony on the island, and a list of places compiled in Ravenna gives it the title colonia Julia. The name means “at the towers”, from the fuller Turris Libisonis, which the geographer Ptolemy also records. Remains include a bridge of seven arches and a temple of Fortuna, the goddess of luck.
