Listen to the story
Tigranocerta means the city of Tigranes: the new capital that the Armenian king Tigranes the Second founded after 80 BC and peopled with inhabitants forcibly moved from Mazaka in Cappadocia. The Roman general Lucullus took it in 69 BC, before it was even finished, yet it remained a city into late antiquity, and in the fifth century it was the seat of both a Syrian and an Armenian bishop. The map marks it with a pair of towers. Its site is still disputed. Older research placed it at Silvan in Turkey, but many now favour Arzan, where the wide ruins of a barely studied city stretch along a riverbank.
