Tivisco
Jupa
Listen to the story
Tivisco is written here as a bare name on the road line, yet the same place turns up a second time, marked with a symbol, as the end of another route, a puzzling duplication that seems to be the mapmaker's own doing rather than the copyist's. The town took its name from the river Tibiscus, today's Timiş, and its ruins lie at Jupa in Romania. The geographer Ptolemy lists it. Its fort in the Roman province of Upper Dacia held auxiliary troops, among them archers and units of Moors and Palmyrenes, who brought eastern gods with them. Rich iron and gold mines lay nearby.
