Trapezunte

Trabzon

Listen to the story

Trapezus, a Greek colony of Sinope that is now Trabzon on the Turkish Black Sea coast, has wandered on the Tabula: the map moves it to the sea's northern shore. The likeliest cause is a simple mechanical slip. When fitting the road lists onto the map, the mapmaker misjudged the spacing and bent the leftover route around the sea. Bolder theories, including echoes of the Argonaut legend, remain speculation. Ancient viewers probably never noticed, since this remote region was hazy to them anyway. Aristotle mentioned a heavy-scented honey from the town's boxwood that robbed healthy eaters of their senses.
